What Is Moissanite? The Story Behind the Stone That Came from Space

How was moissanite discovered?
In 1893, the French chemist Henri Moissan examined remains from a meteorite impact in Arizona, USA. Among the material, he found small sparkling crystals that were initially mistaken for diamonds.
After further analysis, the crystals were found to consist of silicon carbide, an extremely rare mineral with unique properties. The mineral was later named moissanite, after Henri Moissan himself. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1906.
Natural moissanite is so rare that it is almost never used in jewelry today. The moissanite used in modern jewelry is lab-created, produced to achieve exactly the same optical and physical properties as the natural stone.
